Nintendo is back with a bang. During today’s Direct presentation, the publisher revealed plans to remake the beloved game Super Mario RPG for Nintendo Switch. The game made its debut appearance in a trailer that looks like a charming reimagination of a classic. It’s already available for pre-order on the Nintendo e-Shop, and it is set to be released on November 17, 2023.
Classic Super Mario RPG Is Back
Originally titled Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in the United States and first released on the Super Nintendo in 1996, the remake will feature completely new graphics and music, built from the ground up.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Super Mario RPG offers a unique gameplay experience that differs from the usual platforming adventures of the iconic mustachioed plumber. It is a turn-based role-playing game (RPG) with strategic and tactical combat similar to the popular Final Fantasy series. In fact, the original game was developed by Square, the company that eventually became Square Enix, known for their work on the Final Fantasy games.
Elsewhere during the Direct, Nintendo also teased the addition of a new playable character. Princess Peach, a well-known character in the Mario franchise, will apparently join in on the action. Although the details are still unclear, it is likely that Princess Peach will have her own storyline, moveset, and abilities, making her a playable character in the game.
Fans can look forward to purchasing the game on November 17, 2023.
