Restoring Moria to its former glory means lots of crafting, both to repair its fallen halls and to forge the tools you’ll need to make your way through its depth. Free Range Games’ latest survival experience does a pretty solid job of making its crafting systems intuitive, and it’s all familiar territory to survival genre veterans. But if you’re just starting out or want a handy reference, here we’ll be detailing a Return to Moria crafting list of recipes in the game and how to unlock them. This guide has been updated over time for improved clarity.
Before we jump in, obviously all the various gear, tools, and items require resources to craft once you have unlocked the recipe itself. Do check out our full resources guide if you want help locating those.
Crafting List: Return to Moria Packs & Keys
- Adventurer’s Pack: A sturdy pack with 25 slots. Craft it at a Workbench using 8 Hides.
- Brewskin: Holds 4 servings of your chosen brew. Make it at a Workbench with 1 Steel Ingot, 1 Ubasam Wood, and 3 Leather.
- Crystal Flare: A throwable light source, crafted in the field using 3 True-Quartz.
- Scout’s Pack: Offers 10 slots, crafted using 3 Hide Scraps. It’s the default equipment, so only make another if you lose the original.
- Torch: The basic necessity of any miner, crafted from Wood Scraps.
Key Items
Keys unlock various chests throughout Moria, each crafted at a Forge with specific resources:
- Balin’s Key: Requires 2 Khazad Steel Ingots.
- Frar’s Key: Needs 3 Khazad Steel Ingots. Also, need to find Frar’s Chest
- Loni’s Key: Made with 2 Bronze Ingots. Must find Loni’s Chest.
- Oin’s Key: Also crafted with 2 Bronze Ingots. Find Oin’s chest.
- Ori’s Key: Just 1 Iron Ingot is needed. Find Ori’s chest.
How to Get All Return to Moria Pickaxes & Hammers
Hammers and pickaxes are vital for crafting and resource gathering:
- Iron Hammer: The starter hammer for building and repairing, crafted with 2 Iron Ingots and 4 Wood Scraps.
- Steel Hammer: A stronger building hammer made at a Forge with 2 Steel Ingots, 4 Elven Wood, and 1 Hide. Steel Hammer full walkthrough guide.
- Shanor Hammer: An advanced hammer crafted at the Great Belegost Forge using 3 Shanor Ingots, 1 Black Diamond, and 4 Ubasam Wood. Need to visit the Great Library to unlock.
- Star-metal Hammer: The peak of hammer craftsmanship, requiring 4 Star-Metal Ingots and 1 Black Diamond.
- Adamant Hammer: Unlock the Khuzdul Forge, then gather 15 Adamant, 4 Ironwood, and 2 Fine Leather. Full walkthrough here.
- Simple Pickaxe: A Tier 1 pickaxe crafted with 3 Metal Fragments and 4 Wood Scraps.
- Steel Pickaxe: A Tier 2 tool made at the Forge with 3 Steel Ingots, 4 Elven Wood, and 1 Hide. Full walkthrough here.
- First Age Pickaxe: A Tier 3 pickaxe requiring a Forge with a Gem Cutter, crafted with 3 Steel Ingots, 1 Black Diamond, and 4 Ubasam Wood.
- Ironwood Pickaxe: The Tier 4 pickaxe, also needs a Forge with a Gem Cutter and is made from 3 Shanor Ingots, 1 Black Diamond, and 4 Ironwood.
Masterwork Tools
For the master craftsman, these tools help you kick on and reach the latter stages of Return to Moria:
- Durin’s Axe: A masterwork pickaxe, created at the Great Forge of Durin with 3 Durinul Iron Ingots, 3 Sun-Stones, 4 Ironwood, and 1 Fine Leather. Also requires x5 Fragments; first Fragment walkthrough here.
- Quarrymaster: Another masterwork pickaxe, crafted at the Khuzdul Forge or Great Forges, using 6 Steel Ingots, 6 Silver Ingots, 1 Black Diamond, and 8 Ubasam Wood. Must unlock the Great Forge of Narvi (or other Great Forge).
Brews and Lighting
To survive the darkness of Moria, one must be prepared with brews for stamina and lighting for vision:
- Wanderkeg: A large brew with 40 servings, crafted at any major forge with 1 Steel Ingot and 12 Elven Wood. Must unlock Great Forge of Narvi.
- Wood Flare: A simple throwable light, made from 3 Wood Scraps and 2 Cloth Scraps.
- Zarok Torch: A masterwork torch, crafted with 1 Steel Ingot, 15 True-Quartz, 4 Wood Scraps, and 1 Hide at any major forge. Great Forge of Narvi.
How to Unlock Armor & Weapon Recipes
As we’ve explained in our detailed guide on statue repairs, to craft armor, you’ll need to unlock recipes by repairing statues. There’s al or through other means such as Muznakans. Craft armor at the appropriate forge or workbench using the materials specified in your recipe list. It’s worth noting that equipment does degrade, but a repair smithy can restore your gear to its former glory, provided you have the necessary resources. You can also destroy any unwanted items you don’t want after having crafted them.
So there you have it. As expected, the crafting system in Return to Moria is fairly robust. It’s central to the gameplay loop and determines how you progress through the game. While overall it does a pretty good job of explaining how and where to unlock/craft most items in the game, this crafting list should make things way easier.
