2019’s Resident Evil 2 is now the best-selling game in the franchise. The news comes by way of Capcom’s recent update of its Platinum Titles list, which has revealed that as of June 30th, 2023, the game has achieved an impressive 12.6 million copies sold.
That’s a total that surpasses the previous title holder, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which sold 12.4 million units. Originally launched for the PS4 in 2019, the remake was later adapted for the PS5, offering players a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5.
Resident Evil 2 Tops Capcom Platinum Games List
At the pinnacle of Capcom’s best-selling games stands Monster Hunter World, boasting a remarkable 19 million units sold. Following closely behind is Monster Hunter Rise, with an impressive 13.2 million copies sold. However, the top 10 list is predominantly dominated by the Resident Evil series. The only other IP breaking into the top 10 is Street Fighter V, with 7.3 million copies sold.
Notably, the recently released Resident Evil 4 is steadily climbing up the ranks, currently holding 4.9 million units sold. As fans eagerly support the latest Resident Evil games, the best-selling titles in the franchise currently stack up as follows:
- Resident Evil 2 Remake — 12.6 million
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard — 12.4 million
- Resident Evil 5 — 8.8 million
- Resident Evil 6 — 8.8 million
- Resident Evil Village — 8.3 million

- Resident Evil 2 (PS1) — 4.96 million

As a whole, the Resident Evil franchise has now sold over 146 million copies worldwide, but the next installment out of Capcom remains a mystery for now. Resident Evil 4 will receive a PSVR2 mode in the future — and a Separate Ways expansion focusing on Ada Wong is likely too — but a new game or remake isn’t official yet
The overall sales of the Resident Evil franchise have surpassed 146 million copies worldwide. However, the next release from Capcom is currently unknown. While there are plans to introduce a PSVR2 mode for Resident Evil 4 in the future, as well as a potential expansion centered around Ada Wong called Separate Ways, there is no official confirmation of a new game or remake at this time.
We Game Daily rated Resident Evil 2 as the best remake of all time in its recent round-up.
