Move over Peter Parker, Insomniac Games has announced that Miles Morales will take the lead in its future titles. The decision comes after the critical and commercial success of Spider-Man 2, where both Peter Parker and Miles Morales shared heroic duties.
The latest installment, which has become the fastest-selling game in PlayStation Studios’ history, had players alternating between the two characters, battling iconic adversaries like Venom, Lizard, and Kraven the Hunter. However, in a revealing interview with Gizmodo, Insomniac’s narrative director Ben Arfmann and advanced writer Brittney Morris, hinted that the shared limelight is set to dim for Peter Parker in upcoming sequels.
Notably, this isn’t the only Marvel lore tidbit shared by Insomniac in recent weeks. The developer has confirmed only just last month that its upcoming Wolverine game is set within the same universe as Spidey.
Sony’s statistics boast an impressive 2.5 million copies sold within the first day of release, indicating that a sequel is more than just a possibility—it’s expected. During the interview, when pressed about the game’s conclusion and the future face of the franchise, Arfmann and Morris acknowledged that Miles Morales would be assuming the primary role as Spider-Man.
Morris praised the character development of Miles throughout the game, noting his journey from uncertainty to becoming the city’s primary savior—especially in moments when Peter Parker could not uphold the mantle. Arfmann revealed that the narrative team had planned early on for a pivotal moment where Miles would receive the proverbial torch. The decision became clearer as the story unfolded, culminating in a powerful scene that symbolized the transition.
Still, despite the popularity of Miles Morales and the natural passing of the baton from old to young, Peter Parker has always been the center of the franchise. It will be interesting to see how fans react to his absence long-term. Surely, Insomniac will include Parker as a cameo appearance in future DLCs.
