Cyberpunk 2077 has been slowly improved over time by CDPR since its rocky launch. It’s fair to say the latest Update 2.1 now delivers one of the best RPGs of the past decade. But for some, it still isn’t quite perfect. The lack of a native third-person mode continues to be a sore spot for many. Thankfully through the power of mods, there’s an option to change all that. Here we’ll be breaking down how to play Cyberpunk 2077 in third-person.
Vanilla Cyberpunk 2077 only offers select instances where the game switches to a third-person view during vehicle drives and specific, rare story moments. That’s a bummer if you enjoy looking at your character; after all, the game allows for extensive character customization, and being limited to first-person means you can’t check out all that intricate detailing you spent hours setting up. Some players prefer third-person combat, too. So, what’s the solution? Mods, of course!
Cyberpunk 2077 Third-Person Mod & How to Install
A community mod created by a user named sarunama, known as the JB – TPP Mod, enables players to switch to a third-person perspective in Cyberpunk 2077. This mod, hosted on Nexus Mods, a reliable mod provider, has received over 10,000 endorsements, indicating its popularity among gamers.
This mod was created quite some time ago, but before you ask — yes, it works for Cyberpunk 2077 2.1. When you open the game after installing the mod, you should get a notification on which button you will bind your Cyber Engine Tweaks. Then just follow the Tutorial from there. Of course, you’ll need to install it first.
You need to first install another mod called Cyber Engine Tweaks to facilitate its functioning. Cyber Engine Tweaks is a prerequisite mod for many Cyberpunk 2077 mods, including the JB – TPP Mod. This mod provides a range of improvements and bug fixes and allows other mods to function seamlessly within the game. It can be downloaded from GitHub.
Here’s a detailed walkthrough to install the mods:
- Download Cyber Engine Tweaks from GitHub. Click on the .zip file under the Assets section of the latest version.
- Locate your Cyberpunk 2077 folder in Windows Explorer. The folder’s location depends on where you installed the game.
- Extract the contents of the Cyber Engine Tweaks zip (a bin folder) directly into your Cyberpunk 2077 folder.
- Download the JB – TPP Mod from NexusMods.
- Extract the contents of the JB – TPP Mod directly into your Cyberpunk 2077 folder.
- Launch Cyberpunk 2077 and follow the on-screen prompt to assign a keybind for enabling the Cyber Engine Tweaks overlay.
- Use this keybind to open the Cyber Engine Tweaks overlay, then navigate to the Hotkeys tab and map the hotkeys of your choice to enable the TPP mod.
Upon following these steps, you should be able to play Cyberpunk 2077 in a third-person perspective.
Remember, the JB – TPP Mod is still a work in progress and may not offer a perfect third-person experience. The mod does not provide an over-the-shoulder perspective like some other third-person games. However, it does allow you to see your character in action, providing a more comprehensive view of the Night City surroundings.
While the mod allows a third-person view, some animations may appear broken or awkward due to the game’s design for a first-person perspective. It’s also worth noting that the mod is only functional on PCs, meaning console players won’t be able to access this feature.
Despite the demand for a third-person perspective, CD Projekt Red has not announced any plans to include this feature in the game natively. And following its final 2.1 update, it seems as though we’re unlikely to ever get an official option.
So there you have it, a third-person perspective in Cyberpunk 2077 is available but only through mods. Sure, this workaround has its shortcomings, but it does provide a serviceable option that should scratch your third-person itch. Let’s hope that as the modding community continues to evolve we’ll get more refinements an options from talented modders.
