WoW Classic has some interesting new content thanks to the arrival of the new Season of Discovery. In particular, Runes, mystical glyphs that allow Mages to alter their playing style, transforming them from glass cannons to healers, and offering a fresh perspective on Blizzard’s classic MMO. Finding them, though, isn’t easy. Here we’ll be recapping all Mage Rune locations in WoW Classic: Season of Discovery.

Burnout (Chest)
This Rune increases your spell critical strike chance with all spells by 15%, but non-periodic spell critical strikes will have an additional mana cost of 1% of your base mana.
- Alliance Location: Dwarf and Gnome should defeat the Frozen Trogg in the starting area using Fire Spells. For Humans, the target is the Frozen Murloc near Stone Cairn Lake.
- Horde Location: Trolls need to defeat the Frozen Makrura in Razor Hill, whereas Forsaken have to overcome the Frozen Murloc in Tirisfal Glades.
Tip: To make the fight easier, bring another player and only target the enemy with Fire Spells.
Fingers of Frost (Chest)
This rune gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect, which treats your next 2 spells cast as if the target were frozen. This effect lasts 15 seconds.
- Alliance Location: Humans must defeat Hogger.
- Horde Location: Trolls are tasked with defeating Zalazane.
Tip: For this fight, it’s recommended to bring a group of at least three players.
Regeneration Rune (Chest)
This Season of Discovery Rune heals the target for health over 3 seconds and applies Temporal Beacon for 30 seconds. Temporal Beacon records the subject’s space-time position. 80% of all Arcane damage done by the caster is converted to chronomantic healing on each of the caster’s current Temporal Beacon targets. This healing is reduced by 50% on self.
- Alliance Location: Humans can find this rune as a drop from Defias Pillager in Westfall. Gnomes can find it inside a hut on the northern island of Loch Modan.
- Horde Location: Trolls can find it inside Kolkar’s Booty chests in The Barrens, whereas Forsaken can get it as a drop from Dalaran Apprentice in Silverpine Forest.
Enlightenment (Chest)
Allows you to deal 10% more damage while you have more than 70% mana. While below 30% mana, 10% of your mana regeneration continues while casting.
- Alliance Location: Humans need to Polymorph critters with the Wild Polymorph debuff six times.
- Horde Location: Forsaken need to Polymorph six melons in Solliden Farmstead.
Living Flame (Legs)
Summons a spellfire flame that moves toward the target, leaving a trail of spellfire. This trail deals Spellfire damage every second to nearby enemies. Lasts 20 seconds.
Alliance Location: Humans can get this as a drop from Kobold Geomancers, and Gnomes from Frostmane Shadowcasters.
Horde Location: Forsaken can get this as a drop from Scarlet Warriors.
Living Bomb (Gloves)
The target becomes a Living Bomb, taking Fire damage over 12 seconds. After 12 seconds, or when the spell is dispelled, the target explodes, dealing Fire damage to all enemies within 10 yards.
Location (All Races): This rune can be obtained from Stonesplinter Seer in Loch Modan.
Arcane Blast (Gloves)
This WoW Classic Rune blasts the target with energy, dealing Arcane damage. Each time you cast Arcane Blast, the damage of all other Arcane spells is increased by 15%, and the mana cost of Arcane Blast is increased by 175%. This effect stacks up to 4 times and lasts 6 seconds, or until any other Arcane damage spell is cast.
Location (All Races): Players need to find the Naga Manuscript by defeating Wrathtail Naga in Zoram Strand. Using Arcane Explosion on three crystals along the zone is necessary.
Ice Lance (Gloves)
Deals Frost damage to an enemy target. It causes triple damage against Frozen targets.
Location (All Races): This rune is found in each starting zone and is introduced through a Level 2 Quest, which introduces the new Rune mechanic.
Icy Veins Rune (Legs)
Increases spell casting speed by 20% and eliminates pushback from damage while casting. Duration: 20 seconds.
Location (Both Factions): Collect 10 Books across Azeroth.

Arcane Surge Rune (Legs)
Unleashes all remaining mana at the target, dealing increased Arcane damage based on mana left. Mana regeneration is increased by 300% for 8 seconds after use.
Location (Both Factions): Purchasable for 2 gold at Friendly reputation with Durotar Supply and Logistics Guide (Horde) or Azeroth Commerce Authority (Alliance).
Rewind Time Rune (Gloves)
Instantly heals all damage taken by the target in the last 5 seconds, requiring a Temporal Beacon on the target.
Location (Both Factions): Sold by Grizzby in Ratchet. Requires completion of pre-quests:
- Shredder Turbochargers: Bring 16 Shredder Turbochargers from Venture Co. Shredders in Windshear Crag, Stonetalon Mountains.
- Dark Iron Ordinance: Bring 20 Dark Iron Ordinance from Dark Iron Insurgents in North Loch Modan or Rifleman in North Wetlands.
- Fish Oil: Bring 24 Fish Oil from murlocs in Hillsbrad or Wetlands, or from the Auction House.
Mass Regeneration Rune (Legs)
Heals all party members within 15 yards of the target for a significant amount over 3 seconds and applies Temporal Beacon for 15 seconds. Temporal Beacon converts 80% of Arcane damage to healing on Beacon targets, with reduced effectiveness on self and when using Arcane Explosion.
Location (Both Factions): In Raven Hill, Duskwood:
- Go to the northeastern crypt, descend and turn left into the first large room. Near the entrance, interact with an object to obtain a Decrepit Phylactery.
- Exit and head to the western crypt. Descend and turn right into the room with a stone throne.
- Use the Phylactery on Slumbering Bones in this room to summon a level 25 Elite Awakened Lich, which drops Spell Notes: Mass Regeneration. Beware of the level 35 elite Mor’Ladim in the area.
