Bids are made before the match starts and determine the goal for that round. So, you will be bidding before each round, and being unable to meet the bid means your points will go down to 0.
When playing Spades Online for money, you can’t afford to make an error bidding. Your goal must be gauging the accurate number of tricks and then making additional tricks. Here’s what you need to keep in mind during every round.
1. Evaluate the Hand Strength
Accurate bidding is the cornerstone of achieving success in Spades. Before raising the paddle, carefully analyze the strength of your hand. Go through the thirteen cards you are holding, separate them by rank, and count the trump cards you have. Even in trump cards, you should also consider the number of high Spades you hold.
2. Learn the Art of Balanced Bidding
A balanced bidding approach is the safest bet unless you are dealt a powerhouse hand that justifies a high bid. A balanced bid reflects the number of tricks you believe you can win, and when combined with your partner’s bid, it should ideally reach a target of thirteen tricks (excluding nil bids).
Overbidding by just one trick can have severe consequences, while the penalty for underbidding by a single trick is relatively minor. If you’re confident in winning 2 tricks and might achieve a 3rd, it’s safer to bid 2.
3. Communicate with Your Partner
Spades are typically placed by four players, where one team has two players. So, it is a partnership card game. Making your bid without paying attention to your partner’s bidding history will not bode well for you. Bids like one or two can signal weakness, while bids of three or higher suggest strength. Adjust your bids accordingly to complement your teammate’s potential. For example, if your partner bids two, you may want to bid three or four if you have a strong hand.
4. The Nil Bid Gamble

Similarly, if East starts with a low card, aim to play as high a card as possible. It’s far more detrimental to fail a nil and drop 100 points than to miss your bid of 3 and lose only 30 points.
5. Strategically Lead Spades
You must lead the first set to set the tone for the trick. If you have a strong Spade suit, establish dominance by leading a Spade early. This is also going to force out your opponent’s high Spades.
However, if you don’t have a strong suit, avoid giving your opponents unwanted information about your hand.
6. Get Good at Signaling
Following suit after your partner leads is considered a sign of signaling strength. On the other hand, discarding a low Spade suggests weakness. Use this knowledge to communicate with your partner to work together to take tricks.
7. Count Cards to Your Advantage
Keeping a mental track of the cards played, especially high Spades is very important. This can give you a significant edge and allow you to predict what cards your opponents might hold perfectly. You can gain a competitive advantage by adjusting your play according to your assessment.

Pay close attention to your opponents’ bidding and playing patterns. If you identify a player with a consistently weak Spade suit, target them with aggressive Spade leads. You can also double them strategically.
