In a recent sales update, CD Projekt has announced that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has smashed past 4 million sales. Within just the first week of its release on September 26, available on platforms including PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, the expansion sold an impressive 3 million copies. As of now, two months post-launch, Phantom Liberty’s sales have soared to 4.3 million.
Adam Kiciński, the CEO of CD Projekt, expressed his satisfaction with the expansion’s performance. “We are very pleased with the launch of Phantom Liberty,” Kiciński stated. He highlighted the importance of the expansion and the concurrent Update 2.0 in enhancing the gameplay experience in Night City, noting that these developments play a significant role in the ongoing evolution of the Cyberpunk franchise.
In a comparison of sales velocity, he highlighted that Cyberpunk 2077 itself, which has sold over 25 million copies since its December 2020 release, is outpacing The Witcher 3 in terms of sales. The Witcher 3, another flagship title from CD Projekt, has reached over 50 million sales since its 2015 release.
In related news, CD Projekt recently announced the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition. This new edition, which bundles the base game with the Phantom Liberty expansion, is set to release both digitally and physically in select markets on December 5 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. However, it’s notable that the boxed PS5 version of this Ultimate Edition will not include Phantom Liberty on the disc.
Cyberpunk 2077 infamously launched to overwhelming negative user reception after its botched releases on previous generation consoles PS4 and Xbox One. The ropey performance and unfinished nature of the game left a sour taste in the mouths of many. Clearly, the development team has been hard at work to recover from that shaky start, with the Ultimate Edition of the game representing a finished product that is immeasurably better than its original launch. In fact, the current version of the game is already widely accepted as among the best RPGs of the past decade.
In light of the success of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt appears to be shifting its focus to future projects. Gabe Amatangelo, the game director for Cyberpunk 2077, indicated that no more major updates for the title are planned as the company turns its attention to other endeavors. This includes the development of a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, which is currently underway at CD Projekt’s North American studios.
