If you thought Epic Games’ Fortnite was past its best, think again. Incredibly, six years after its initial launch the game has made history this past weekend with its nostalgic “Fortnite OG” event. The 44.7 million players who logged in on November 4 saw it record the most successful 24-hour period in the game’s history. The event’s massive appeal was confirmed by a tweet from the game’s official account, which boasted its success.
In a Tweet, the developer said:
“Way to start things off with a big bang. We’re blown away by the response to Fortnite OG. Yesterday was the biggest day in Fortnite’s history with over 44.7 million players jumping in and 102 million hours of play. To all Fortnite players, OG and new, thank you!”
Data from Fortnite tracker Fortnite.GG highlighted the peak of this frenzy, revealing a record-breaking 6,172,463 concurrent players at one point during the event. That’s six times as many players as Counter-Strike 2 on the same day, which is the latest iteration of arguably the most popular and long-running FPS game of all time.
The month-long Fortnite celebration, which started on November 3 and will run until December 2, is designed to be a homage to the early days of Fortnite. Players are thrilled as the game’s map has reverted to the beloved Chapter 1 island, complete with fan-favorite locations such as Tilted Towers and Loot Lake.
Epic Games has planned a series of updates that will reintroduce various aspects from past seasons, starting with Chapter 1 Season 5, including the return of items like Shopping Carts and classic weapons.
However, alongside the celebrations, Epic Games has also implemented a price hike for Fortnite V-Bucks, the game’s in-game currency, in several regions, including the US and Eurozone countries. This increase may come as a surprise to returning players getting reacquainted with the game’s economy. Despite this, the Fortnite OG event has proven that the spirit of nostalgia and the draw of beloved gameplay can bring players together in record-breaking numbers.
